Woman, Man Dead After Seattle U-District Shooting

Police believe the man fatally shot the woman before shooting himself near University Way Northeast, with both later confirmed dead.

SEATTLE, WA — A woman and a man are dead after a shooting Friday evening in Seattle’s University District that police are investigating as a suspected domestic violence incident, authorities and local news reports said.

Seattle police were dispatched shortly before 7 p.m. Nov. 6 to the 4500 block of University Way Northeast, a busy commercial corridor commonly known as “The Ave.” Officers found a woman with an apparent gunshot wound and a man nearby with what police described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe the man shot the woman before shooting himself, according to the Seattle Police Department. Medics transported him to Harborview Medical Center with critical injuries. Hospital officials confirmed Saturday morning that he later died from those injuries, according to FOX 13 Seattle.

Police initially described the investigation as a possible domestic violence murder and attempted suicide. Authorities had not publicly explained by Saturday how the man and woman knew each other or what led to the shooting. Their names had also not been released in the reports reviewed for this story.

Seattle Fire officials said the woman was 25 years old, according to KIRO 7. Police have not publicly released the man’s age. Investigators have also not announced additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

A witness who works across the street told KIRO 7 that she and other employees heard gunfire and went outside. The witness said she saw the injured man in the street and called attention to him so emergency help could be provided. Police said officers located the woman and the man in separate nearby locations.

The shooting prompted a University of Washington alert Friday evening. Authorities later said there was no continuing danger to the public. Seattle police said they were not searching for additional suspects, indicating investigators believe the shooting was confined to the two people who died.

The Seattle Police Department’s homicide unit is handling the investigation. Police have classified the woman’s death as a homicide investigation while detectives work to establish the full sequence of events and circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Authorities had not announced a motive or released further information about the relationship between the two people as of Saturday. The investigation remains ongoing, and police have said there are no outstanding suspects or known continuing risks to the public.
