Georgia Man Charged After Mother Found Shot in Holly Springs

Police arrested Branden Barnes at a local motel after he contacted authorities, and jail records show he is being held without bond.

HOLLY SPRINGS, GA — A Georgia man faces murder and other felony charges after his 63-year-old mother was found shot to death inside her Holly Springs home, authorities said, following a call that led officers to arrest him outside a nearby motel.

Branden Barnes was taken into custody at the Pine Crest Motor Lodge after contacting emergency dispatchers Thursday night, according to Holly Springs police. Authorities said Barnes told officers he had harmed his mother and directed them to the location where she could be found. Police and sheriff’s deputies then went to a home in the Harmony on the Lakes community, where first responders found Diane Jones dead.

Police said Jones appeared to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities have described the case as a domestic incident and said it was isolated, with no continuing threat to the public. Investigators have not publicly detailed the argument that police said happened before the shooting or explained what led to the confrontation.

Officers were sent to the motel on Holly Springs Parkway at about 10:07 p.m., according to police. Barnes had rented a room there after the dispute with his mother, authorities said. Holly Springs police spokesperson Officer Matt Rice told FOX 5 Atlanta that Barnes was outside his room with only a cellphone when officers arrived and told them he had injured his mother.

Police took Barnes into custody and brought him to the Holly Springs Police Department for questioning before he was booked into the Cherokee County jail. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office also assisted Holly Springs investigators with processing the scene.

Cherokee County jail records list Barnes on charges of murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission or attempted commission of a crime. Each charge is listed with no bond. The jail record identifies the Holly Springs Police Department as the arresting agency.

The charges are accusations, and the case has not been adjudicated. Authorities have not released a detailed account of what happened inside the home before Jones was found, and investigators have not publicly established a motive beyond describing the incident as arising from a domestic dispute.

Police also have not publicly clarified ownership of the firearm reportedly recovered during the investigation. The available reporting does not identify additional suspects or indicate that anyone else was injured. Investigators continued gathering evidence after the home was secured, while neighbors watched police and emergency crews work in the subdivision.

Barnes remained in the Cherokee County jail without bond as of the latest available jail information. The investigation remains active, and authorities have said additional information may be released as detectives continue their work and the criminal case moves through the court system.
