PHOENIX, AZ – A somber vigil took place this evening at Maryvale High School, honoring 16-year-old Michael Montoya, who tragically lost his life in a stabbing incident earlier this week. The community gathered to remember the high school student, who was fatally wounded by a fellow classmate on Tuesday.
Family members, friends, and community members began arriving at the high school shortly before the vigil commenced. Joanna, Montoya’s aunt, expressed the family’s deep sorrow but also their gratitude for the overwhelming support shown by the community during this difficult time.
A makeshift memorial has steadily grown since Wednesday, adorned with flowers, balloons, and heartfelt messages in tribute to Montoya. The teenager’s untimely death has left the community in shock, with many struggling to come to terms with the violent act that took his life.
Authorities reported that Montoya was stabbed in class by another student, identified as 16-year-old Chris Aguilar, using a folding pocket knife. Both students were rushed to the hospital, where Montoya succumbed to his injuries.
Cathy Diaz, whose daughter attended middle school with Montoya, shared her disbelief. “He was very bright and had his whole life ahead of him,” she said. “This incident breaks everyone’s hearts in the community, and we just want to come out and support him.”
