Vehicle Crashes Into Resort Pool, Injuring Two Children

Police said the vehicle broke through a pool fence before becoming stuck in the water at Smugglers’ Notch Resort.

CAMBRIDGE, VT — Two children suffered minor injuries after a vehicle drove through a fence and entered a swimming pool at Smugglers’ Notch Resort, Vermont State Police said.

Troopers were called to Mogul Mouse Drive at the resort at about 3:34 p.m. Monday, July 13, following a report of a single-vehicle crash. Police determined that the vehicle had crossed the fence surrounding the pool and become stuck in the water. The circumstances that caused the crash remained under investigation.

The two injured people were treated by members of the Cambridge Rescue Squad, according to a state police news release. Police described their injuries as minor and withheld additional information because of their ages. Authorities did not publicly identify the driver or say whether any citations or charges were being considered.

Local news reports identified one of the injured swimmers as 9-year-old Joseph Sage. He told WPTZ that the vehicle struck his head and pulled him beneath the water. Sage said his father entered the pool and helped him and another child get out.

Sage reported scratches, pain in his side and an injury to his head after the crash. A family member later told People that he was taken for medical care the following day after he did not feel well and was diagnosed with a concussion. Police did not independently release those medical details.

The other injured child, described in local reports as a young girl, was taken from the scene by ambulance. Authorities did not release her identity or provide further information about her condition. State police said both people injured in the crash had been treated for minor injuries.

Witness accounts described adults and lifeguards moving quickly to remove children from the pool. Sage’s family said his father helped pull both children from the water. Police did not provide a detailed account of the rescues or say how many other people were in the pool when the vehicle entered it.

Notch Road Auto was called to the resort and removed the vehicle from the pool, police said. Published photographs showed significant damage to the fence around the swimming area. The pool was temporarily closed following the crash, according to local reports.

Police have not said whether a mechanical problem, driver error or another factor caused the vehicle to leave the road and enter the pool. The driver’s name and any findings from the investigation had not been released as of Thursday.
