One Dead, Two Injured in Shooting on Detroit Freeway

Michigan State Police said the three victims were traveling together before reaching a nearby Detroit police precinct.

DETROIT, MI — One person died and two others were injured after someone fired at their vehicle on eastbound Interstate 96 early Wednesday, according to Michigan State Police.

Troopers were notified about the shooting at 12:51 a.m. near Bentler Street, just east of Outer Drive on Detroit’s west side. Police said the gunfire struck a Chevrolet Traverse carrying all three victims.

The occupants continued to the Detroit Police Department’s Sixth Precinct after the shooting. One person later died, while the other two were taken to a local hospital for treatment, state police said.

Authorities had not released the victims’ names, ages or medical conditions as of Wednesday morning. Police also had not announced a possible motive or described the circumstances that led to the gunfire.

State police said the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident and that investigators knew of no continuing threat to the public. No suspect was in custody as of 10:45 a.m., and authorities had not released a suspect or vehicle description.

Investigators closed the eastbound local lanes of I-96 near the shooting scene while troopers collected evidence and examined the roadway. The express lanes remained available during at least part of the investigation.

Michigan Department of Transportation traffic reports showed all eastbound lanes at Outer Drive were closed beginning at 3:32 a.m. The lanes reopened at 5:41 a.m., after the early-morning investigation caused several hours of disruption.

A vehicle with multiple bullet holes was seen outside the Sixth Precinct after the shooting. Police later confirmed that the three victims had arrived at the precinct in a Chevrolet Traverse, though initial reports did not establish every detail about the vehicle observed by news crews.

Michigan State Police continued investigating Wednesday. Authorities had not announced an arrest or released additional information about who opened fire.
