A possible suspect was detained after gunfire wounded several people Wednesday afternoon at the Cypresswood Drive store.
CYPRESS, TX — Multiple people were shot inside a Kroger grocery store Wednesday afternoon in the Cypress area, prompting a large emergency response and the detention of a possible suspect, according to the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office.
Deputies responded shortly before 3 p.m. to reports of gunfire at the Kroger Marketplace at 20355 Cypresswood Drive, near Fairfield Meadows Drive. Authorities said witnesses reported seeing a man firing a weapon inside the store. Officials urged the public to avoid the area while deputies and emergency medical crews worked at the scene.
Preliminary information from the constable’s office indicated that three people had been shot. At least one person was expected to be taken by helicopter for medical treatment. Authorities had not released the victims’ names, the severity of their injuries or their conditions as of Wednesday afternoon.
The number of victims remained subject to confirmation as investigators gathered information. Early statements from the constable’s office initially reported at least one shooting victim before officials updated the account to say multiple people had been wounded.
Authorities said a possible shooter had been detained, but they did not immediately identify that person or announce any criminal charges. The detention does not establish responsibility for the shooting, and investigators had not disclosed a possible motive or described what may have happened before the gunfire began.
Witnesses described the possible shooter to authorities as a man wearing a yellow shirt and black pants. Officials did not immediately say where the person was detained, whether a weapon was recovered or whether investigators believed anyone else may have been involved.
The shooting brought a heavy law enforcement presence to the shopping area as deputies secured the store and began interviewing witnesses. Authorities asked drivers and nearby residents to use alternate routes so first responders could move safely around the scene.
Officials had not said how many customers or employees were inside the Kroger when the shooting occurred. Information also was not immediately available about damage inside the store, how long the store would remain closed or whether nearby businesses were affected.
The investigation remained in its early stages Wednesday. Authorities said additional information would be released after investigators confirmed the number of victims, their medical conditions and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
