A Detroit man is facing nearly two dozen charges in connection with a mass shooting on the city’s west side over the weekend that left two people dead and six others injured.

The man has been charged with killing two people and injuring six others in a shooting sparked by an argument over a parking lot dispute.

Sofhia Steen was celebrating her sister’s birthday with family when the gunfire started. Two of Steen’s cousins were shot in the face, and her teenage nephew was shot trying to save her. Her whole family is traumatized and in shock, Steen said.

Police said the man shot eight people after becoming upset about the way people had parked their vehicles for a birthday party. The suspect did not call the police, and instead struck eight victims, two of whom are now deceased.

The two victims that died were close friends of the suspect’s children.

Police said the suspect had a military background and strategically staged 11 guns around his home. They recovered 11 firearms from the suspect’s home.

Police believe the suspect suffers from mental illness and have sent all felony weapons arrests to Dawn Ison, the new U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan.
