MIAMI, FL – A disturbing incident involving a rideshare impersonator has led to serious charges in Miami, shedding light on safety concerns for app users. Authorities have arrested Rafael Martinez, accusing him of posing as an Uber driver to commit sexual battery.
According to police, the ordeal began outside a Miami Beach hotel. The victim, after spending the evening with a friend, encountered Martinez, who allegedly offered her a ride. Trusting him, she accepted a drink of vitamin water from him, which police believe was drugged.
The victim reported feeling dizzy before waking up naked in an unfamiliar downtown Miami apartment. Investigators say Martinez attempted to provide her with alcohol to keep her sedated.
DNA evidence linked Martinez to the crime, leading to his arrest more than a year later. He is currently in custody without bond. Miami police are investigating the possibility of additional victims.
Authorities urge rideshare users to verify their driver’s identity through the app before entering a vehicle. “Confirm the vehicle and driver’s information on your app,” police advised.
Uber has responded to the incident, stating that Martinez was not using their platform at the time and has since been banned. Efforts to reach representatives from the hotel and apartment complex involved have been unsuccessful.
Police emphasize the importance of reporting such incidents, encouraging victims not to feel ashamed. Martinez is scheduled to appear in court soon.
