COBB COUNTY, GA – A shooting unfolded in the parking lot of McEachern High School in Cobb County, GA, on Thursday, leaving two people injured. Law enforcement has confirmed that the assailant or assailants involved in the incident remain at large.
Cobb County Schools have affirmed that neither of the victims presently attends the school where the shooting took place. Despite their injuries, both individuals are expected to survive and are receiving medical care at Kennestone Hospital.
Local police, assisted by officers from Powder Springs, swiftly secured the campus following the shooting. Currently, they are working on identifying the perpetrator or perpetrators and have reported that they have descriptions of the suspects.
Police Chief Stuart VanHoozer of Cobb County clarified the situation, saying, “It was never an active shooter” but treated it as such due to the initial uncertainty surrounding the emergency calls they received.
A video that illustrates the fight leading up to the shooting was published. The footage shows teenagers involved in a physical altercation followed by what appears to be a shooting incident.
The school has been deemed safe, but the episode has rattled the school community. Jacqueline Delasancha, a witness to the police response during the incident, recalled the urgency in the officers’ behavior.
Samantha Scott, mother of a senior who was on his way to the parking lot when the shooting occurred, echoed the general sentiment, “You see incidents like this on the news, you never think it would be your child calling you. When it hits home it is scary.”
In recent history, the school was involved in another gun-related incident that saw two teens arrested for bringing guns on campus just last December.
