King County prosecutors filed rape and unlawful imprisonment charges after two teenage girls reported being taken from Olympia to a home near Renton.
SEATTLE, WA — Two men accused of taking two teenage girls from Olympia to King County and sexually assaulting them pleaded not guilty Thursday, days after King County sheriff’s tactical deputies arrested them and authorities released body-camera video showing the arrests.
Josue “Joshua” Orozco, 27, and Moises Guardela-Marrugo, 19, face separate charges stemming from an Aug. 13 encounter involving girls ages 15 and 17. King County prosecutors charged Orozco with second-degree rape, third-degree rape and two counts of unlawful imprisonment, each carrying a sexual-motivation enhancement. Guardela-Marrugo is charged with attempted second-degree rape. Both defendants have denied the allegations through their not-guilty pleas.
According to charging documents and investigators, one of the teenagers had communicated online with Guardela-Marrugo before the girls met the two men at a church parking lot in west Olympia. Prosecutors allege the girls expected the men to obtain alcohol for them. Investigators said the group then traveled north toward King County, where the girls were taken to a residence in the Fairwood area southeast of Renton.
Court records allege the teenagers objected to continuing the trip but were prevented from leaving the vehicle. Prosecutors say the girls were later sexually assaulted at the Fairwood residence. Authorities said the teenagers were eventually taken to a Kent shopping area and left there. They found transportation back to Olympia, where the allegations were reported to law enforcement. The girls later underwent sexual assault examinations, according to court records.
King County Sheriff’s Office TAC 30 deputies arrested both defendants Sept. 2. FOX 13 Seattle reported that Guardela-Marrugo was taken into custody in Auburn and that Orozco was arrested in Kent. Another report, citing court records, described Thurston County authorities as helping track Orozco in connection with the arrest. Newly released body-camera footage from TAC 30 shows deputies taking the men into custody. Authorities have described the operation as part of a broader investigation that involved a Thurston County narcotics task force.
Investigators said searches connected to that operation resulted in the seizure of fentanyl, cocaine, four firearms, cash, jewelry and several vehicles. Authorities reported recovering 387 grams of fentanyl, 1,902 grams of cocaine and $16,000 in cash, along with a Chevrolet Corvette, a Chevrolet Monte Carlo and a tow truck. Those seizures were associated with the narcotics investigation, and FOX 13 reported that no separate King or Thurston county charges tied to the seized drugs and other property had been filed as of Thursday.
Prosecutors allege Orozco used Instagram messages in connection with arranging the Aug. 13 meeting. According to court records, investigators said he acknowledged providing alcohol to the teenagers but denied sexual contact. Prosecutors also allege that while he was being transported after his arrest, Orozco offered money to a law enforcement officer in exchange for being allowed to escape. FOX 13 reported that prosecutors intend to pursue an additional firearm charge and a charge related to the alleged bribery attempt. Those allegations have not been proven in court.
Orozco was being held on bail of more than $500,000 following his arraignment. Guardela-Marrugo’s bail remained at $200,000 after his attorney argued that he was not a flight risk. The defense attorney told the court that Guardela-Marrugo works as a mechanic, attends welding school and helps support his mother, and said the defense expects to present evidence supporting his innocence.
The case remains pending in King County Superior Court. Both defendants are presumed innocent unless proved guilty, and the allegations against them will be tested through the court process. Investigators have not announced a final resolution of the related narcotics investigation or any additional charges arising from the property seized during the Sept. 2 operation.
