COCOA, FL – A tragic incident unfolded on Friday morning near Palm Bay when two workers lost their lives in a hit-and-run accident on the shoulder of Interstate 95. The suspected driver, who fled the scene, was later apprehended over 100 miles away in Palm Beach County and returned to Brevard County in handcuffs.
The accident occurred just before 10 a.m. when two surveyors were conducting their work in the grass beside the highway. The driver of a tractor-trailer allegedly struck the men, stopped briefly, and then sped away, according to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers. This shocking incident has left the community mourning the loss of two individuals simply doing their jobs.
Channel 9’s Melanie Holt was on the scene at the Cocoa FHP station when the suspect was brought back to the county. Despite being in custody, the suspect has reportedly been uncooperative with authorities. However, the trucking company involved has been forthcoming and expressed deep condolences for the victims’ families.
The damaged vehicle was located nearly 130 miles from the crash site, thanks to crucial information provided by a witness and evidence found at the scene. The FHP expressed relief at having apprehended the suspect still behind the wheel, a significant step toward justice in this tragic case.
Investigators have yet to determine whether the driver was under the influence at the time of the accident. The suspect’s continued lack of cooperation complicates the investigation, but authorities remain committed to ensuring accountability.
The two victims, identified as residents of Volusia County, were not obstructing traffic or posing any danger to passing vehicles. They were simply trying to earn a living when their lives were abruptly ended.
The suspect is currently held without bond at the Brevard County Jail, awaiting a court appearance. This incident highlights the severe consequences of leaving the scene of an accident and the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in such cases.
The trucking company has expressed remorse over the incident and is cooperating fully with the investigation. Meanwhile, the community is left grappling with the loss of two lives and the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
