WASHINGTON, D.C. – The family of Donell Phillips is grappling with grief and anger after the 55-year-old father and grandfather was killed in a shocking crosswalk incident. Phillips was on his dinner break, having just withdrawn money from an ATM, when he was struck by a stolen vehicle and robbed in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The incident, captured on surveillance footage, shows Phillips walking along U Street Northwest at around 4:15 a.m. when an SUV began following him. As he entered the crosswalk at 12th Street, the vehicle turned sharply, hitting him. Police say the assailants exited the vehicle, stole his cash, and fled the scene, leaving Phillips lifeless on the street.
His family is heartbroken and struggling to comprehend the cruelty of the act. Phillips’ daughter and granddaughter expressed their devastation, describing him as a generous man who helped others without seeking anything in return.
“It’s heartbreaking because it was so cruel,” said Phillips’ daughter. “They left him there and robbed him after they killed him. They took a good man who stood for a lot of things and helped so many people.”
Phillips, who worked as an overnight concierge at an apartment complex, was known for his kindness and support to those around him. His family remembers him as a best friend and a pillar of strength who uplifted those in need.
The stolen vehicle, a white Hyundai Santa Fe, was recovered shortly after the incident. However, the suspects remain at large. D.C. police have linked the same individuals to two other armed robberies that occurred in the half-hour before Phillips’ murder.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward, and a reward is being offered for any leads that might help capture the perpetrators.
As the investigation continues, Phillips’ family remains hopeful for justice, choosing to pray for those responsible rather than seek revenge. They hope that by sharing their story, they can honor his legacy and bring attention to the senseless violence that claimed his life.
