Three year old shoots suspect wanted for murder by accident

On Thursday, a three-year-old gained access to an unsecured firearm, firing a single bullet that ended up in sending both Trayshaun Smith, 23, and the child’s mothers friend to the Franciscan Health Lafayette East Hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident occurred in an apartment complex in Lafayette, Indiana.

The Lafayette Police Department responded to the shooting and soon afterwards discovered that Smith had an active murder warrant from Cook County, Illinois. He was then taken into custody.

Police are coordinating with Markham, Illinois to build a case against Smith in the incident.

This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of practicing gun safety and proper storage of firearms. Firearms must be kept in secure locations, away and out of reach of children, and children must be taught the proper handling and dangers of firearms.
