RALEIGH, NC – A North Carolina woman has been charged in the death of her estranged husband, a retired Green Beret, whose body was discovered in a pond a month after he went missing. Police allege that 50-year-old Shaina Cloud murdered her husband, Clinton “Clint” Bonnell, just one day after he informed her of his intention to divorce.
Bonnell, who had recently retired from the Army after two decades of service, was reportedly looking forward to a new chapter in his life. He vanished in January, and his remains were found in a pond three miles from the home he shared with Cloud and her daughter. The grim discovery was made after a 911 call reported a body floating in the water.
Kelly Edwards, who was dating Bonnell in the months leading up to his death, described him as a vibrant individual who was passionate about fitness, nature, and animals. According to Edwards, Bonnell and Cloud had been living largely separate lives for years, and Bonnell was ready to move forward with a divorce.
The night before he disappeared, Bonnell texted Edwards to say he had met with a divorce lawyer and informed Cloud of his plans. Edwards recalled that he seemed worn out that evening, suggesting he had been through an emotional ordeal.
Authorities claim that Cloud shot and killed Bonnell the following day. Cloud, however, maintains her innocence, stating that the last time she saw Bonnell was at their home on January 27. A forensic investigation led to search warrants for Cloud’s property in Virginia, as well as her vehicle and cell phone.
Bonnell’s family expressed their grief in a statement, remembering him as a selfless individual who dedicated his life to helping others. They are now calling for justice in the case against Cloud.
The investigation, which initially began as a missing person’s case, quickly turned into a homicide inquiry after Bonnell’s partial remains were identified weeks later. Cloud is expected to appear in court later this month.
Bonnell’s relationship with Cloud’s daughter, whom he reportedly adored, adds another layer of complexity to the tragedy. The impact of his death on the young girl has been described as profound.
