Police say an attempted robbery involving three juveniles led to the August shooting death of a 17-year-old girl.
RIVIERA BEACH, FL — Three juveniles have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old girl during an alleged robbery in Riviera Beach, police said.
The arrests follow an investigation into the Aug. 21 shooting near West 36th Street. The Riviera Beach Police Department said the shooting happened at about 8 p.m. and that detectives determined three juveniles had conspired to commit a robbery that ended with the girl being killed. The U.S. Marshals Service arrested the juveniles, according to police.
Police said the juvenile accused of being the shooter faces charges of first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm, principal in the first degree and tampering with a witness, victim or informant. The other two juveniles face charges of first-degree murder, principal in the first degree and attempted armed robbery. The allegations remain subject to court proceedings, and the arrests do not establish guilt.
The names and ages of the three accused juveniles were not released in the reports reviewed. Authorities also have not publicly identified the 17-year-old victim in the available reporting. Police did not release additional details about what they believe was being targeted in the alleged robbery or describe the events immediately preceding the shooting.
The Riviera Beach Police Department said Flock cameras and other technology played a “critical role” in the investigation. Police did not provide additional details about what information investigators obtained from those systems or how that evidence led detectives to the three juveniles.
Police Chief Michael A. Coleman called the violence senseless and said the department was committed to stopping similar incidents. “In this case, the individuals involved are juveniles,” Coleman said. “This behavior cannot continue, and our community deserves better.”
The arrests mark a significant development about a month after the fatal shooting. Police have not publicly released a more detailed timeline of the investigation, including when each juvenile was identified as a suspect or when each arrest was made.
