The delivery driver was unharmed, but the shooting prompted an hourslong SWAT response at a Monroe apartment complex.
MONROE, WA — Police are searching for a man accused of firing through an apartment door at a UPS delivery driver Thursday, prompting an hourslong tactical response before officers entered the unit and discovered the suspected shooter was gone.
The shooting happened shortly before 5 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Terra Apartments in Monroe, according to police and local news reports. Investigators said the driver was outside an apartment when a man fired through the door. The driver was not struck, and police reported no other injuries. The incident led officers to surround the apartment and call in specialized resources as they worked under the belief that an armed person could still be inside.
Monroe officers were joined by North Sound Metro SWAT, an armored vehicle and a negotiator. Police maintained a perimeter around the apartment while tactical officers prepared to enter. Residents described a heavy police presence around the complex as officers used loudspeakers in an effort to communicate with whoever they believed might be inside.
Tyler Hayes, who told KIRO 7 he watched the response unfold, said officers repeatedly called for the person inside to come out and show that he was safe. Hayes said the activity continued into the night, with officers positioned around the complex and residents watching the operation from nearby homes.
When tactical officers eventually entered the apartment, they found no one inside, police said. Investigators later said they believed the shooter had escaped before officers arrived. Surveillance footage reviewed during the investigation reportedly showed a person leaving the apartment through a rear exit before police established the perimeter.
The shooting occurred in the 18000 block of Blueberry Lane, where investigators remained after the tactical operation ended. Police continued gathering evidence and reviewing video as they sought to identify and locate the person believed responsible. Authorities had not publicly released the suspect’s name or a detailed description as of Saturday.
Video obtained by KIRO 7 showed a UPS truck arriving at the apartment complex and a driver walking toward the building. Police vehicles began arriving minutes later. Images from the area also showed evidence markers and damage outside the apartment after the shooting. Authorities have not publicly disclosed what led to the gunfire or whether the delivery driver and the suspected shooter knew each other.
UPS confirmed that the driver involved in the incident worked for the company. The company said it was aware of the Oct. 8 shooting and was grateful that its employee was not hurt. UPS referred additional questions about the investigation to law enforcement.
The Monroe Police Department said the case remains under investigation. No arrests had been announced and no injuries were reported. Police have not publicly identified a motive or said what charges could be considered if a suspect is taken into custody.
