AUGUSTA, GA – A routine traffic stop on Interstate 20 turned deadly in Augusta, leaving the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office reeling. The incident, which occurred just after 6:30 p.m., resulted in the tragic death of one deputy and the hospitalization of another, marking the second officer fatality in Georgia in less than ten days.
The deputies had pulled over a motorhome driven by James Montgomery. According to officials, the stop initially appeared to be routine until deputies informed Montgomery of a protective order related to a domestic violence incident involving his wife. Seemingly compliant, Montgomery’s demeanor shifted when the deputies turned to retrieve paperwork from their patrol car.
As the deputies walked away, Montgomery allegedly produced a 9mm AR pistol that had been modified into a fully automatic weapon. He opened fire on the officers, striking three deputies. Deputy Brandon Sikes was fatally wounded in the attack, while Deputy Gavin White sustained critical injuries to his face. Despite the severity of his injuries, White is reportedly responsive, able to communicate through hand and foot movements, and is undergoing surgery to address damage to his nasal and facial cavities.
The situation escalated further when authorities suspected the presence of a pipe bomb within the motorhome. Investigators are working diligently to confirm this and gather more information about the events leading up to the shooting.
This incident highlights the increasing dangers faced by law enforcement officers in Georgia, with four officers having been hospitalized due to gunfire in recent weeks. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and the community are grappling with the loss and the impact of this violent encounter.
Montgomery’s actions have prompted a broader discussion about officer safety and the challenges of enforcing protective orders in volatile situations. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are focused on understanding the motives behind the attack and ensuring justice for the fallen and injured deputies.
The community has rallied in support of the sheriff’s office, offering condolences and prayers for the officers involved. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on healing and preventing future tragedies.
