Teen with criminal history charged in road rage murder

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA – A road rage incident turned deadly in Gwinnett County, Georgia, leaving one person dead and another injured. The violent encounter unfolded at a busy intersection notorious for street racing and culminated in the Durham Ridge subdivision. Three individuals were involved in the incident, with two vehicles at the center of the conflict.

The suspect, 18-year-old Luis Cruz, is believed to have engaged in a gunfight with the occupants of the other vehicle. The incident was caught on a security camera of a local resident, Uriel Mejia, who also witnessed the event from his window. Mejia recounted seeing the driver suddenly draw a gun and start shooting.

The Lilburn Police Department confirmed that both parties were armed, and gunfire was exchanged. “This was a mutual combat situation,” explained Capt. Scott Bennett of the Lilburn Police Department. The driver of a black SUV involved in the incident was killed, and a passenger was injured and taken to the hospital.

Cruz, the driver of the second vehicle, initially fled the scene but later turned himself in after his uncle contacted the police. Cruz’s criminal history includes multiple arrests over the past year for offenses such as driving on an expired license, DUI, and street racing. He now faces charges of felony murder and aggravated assault for the road rage incident and is being held without bond.

Capt. Bennett expressed his dismay over the incident, stating, “Trivial matters are not settled by violence and gunfire. It’s pointless. It’s senseless, and it has no place in our cities and polite society. People just need to stop, take a deep breath, and move on with their lives.”
