Houston police corrected the victim’s age to 17 and said three teenage suspects were detained after the northeast Houston shooting.
HOUSTON, TX — A 17-year-old boy was shot and robbed of his electric scooter Tuesday evening at Tidwell Park in northeast Houston, and three other teenagers were detained nearby, according to the Houston Police Department.
Police initially reported that the shooting victim was 14 years old but corrected his age to 17 in an update Wednesday. Authorities said the three detained suspects are two 16-year-olds and a 14-year-old. The victim suffered an injury that police said was not life-threatening.
Officers responded about 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, to Tidwell Park at 9700 Spaulding Street. Police said the teenager had been riding an electric scooter near the playground when three people confronted him. Investigators said the teenager was shot in the upper leg and the scooter was taken during the robbery.
Park personnel provided initial assistance to the injured teenager before he was taken to a hospital, police said. Authorities did not publicly identify him, and the latest reports did not provide additional details about his condition beyond describing the injury as non-life-threatening.
Officers searching the area soon located three male teenagers at an apartment complex next to the park. Houston police Lt. Larry Crowson said all three were armed with handguns when officers encountered them. They were detained while investigators worked to determine what happened and each teenager’s role in the case.
The ages released Wednesday clarified information police provided in the first hours after the shooting. Initial reports described the three people detained as older juveniles or young adults. Police later said they were two 16-year-olds and one 14-year-old.
The electric scooter had not been recovered in the latest police update. Authorities also had not released details about where the scooter may have been taken or whether investigators recovered other evidence connected to the shooting and robbery.
Crowson said after the shooting that investigators expected to consult with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office about possible criminal charges. The latest reports reviewed did not confirm that charges had been formally filed, and the identities of the detained teenagers had not been released.
Houston police robbery detectives are continuing the investigation. Authorities have not publicly disclosed whether the victim knew the teenagers who allegedly confronted him, and no additional suspects had been announced in the latest available update.
