PHILADELPHIA, PA — A 36-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man were hospitalized in critical condition after a shooting Wednesday afternoon on North Broad Street that authorities are investigating as an apparent shooting followed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Philadelphia police responded about 2:49 p.m. Sept. 9 to the 2900 block of North Broad Street after receiving a report of a double shooting. Police said the woman had been shot twice. The man suffered a gunshot wound to the head that investigators believe was self-inflicted. Both were taken to Temple University Hospital in critical condition.
Local news reports, citing sources familiar with the investigation, identified the two people as husband and wife. Witnesses told Action News that the pair had been arguing inside or near a black Volvo shortly before gunfire erupted. Police had not publicly confirmed a motive or released the names of either person as of early Thursday.
One witness told Action News that he saw the man and woman arguing before the man produced a gun. The witness said the man shot the woman and then shot himself. Authorities have not released a full account establishing the exact sequence of events, and the investigation remained active.
Action News reported that sources said the argument was followed by a crash. The outlet reported that the woman was shot during the confrontation and that the man later went to a nearby parking area, where he suffered the apparently self-inflicted wound. The gunfire also affected another vehicle nearby. Action News reported that a bullet struck a black SUV and shattered its rear window. A child who was in the vehicle suffered injuries from broken glass and was taken to a hospital. The child’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, and no other injuries were reported.
