ALLEN PARK, MI – The Allen Park High School community gathered at Friday night’s home game to honor the life of Alan Rodgers, a beloved 16-year-old student and athlete who tragically lost his life in a moped crash. The accident occurred Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Ecorse and Telegraph in Taylor.
Taylor Police Chief John Blair described the devastating impact of Rodgers’ death on all who knew him, including his family, friends, and fellow students. Chief Blair noted that the incident has deeply affected not only the community but also the driver involved in the crash, who survived but is emotionally shaken.
Investigations revealed that Rodgers was traveling west on his moped along Ecorse when he approached an intersection. A car traveling east attempted a left turn onto the southbound Telegraph ramp, leading to the collision. Witnesses reported that the traffic light was red, and Rodgers attempted to avoid the car by laying down his bike but was unsuccessful.
Unfortunately, he sustained fatal injuries, and it was confirmed that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
Chief Blair emphasized the importance of road safety as students and the community grieved the loss, encouraging motorcyclists to always wear protective gear and urging drivers to exercise vigilance.
Rodgers’ classmates showed their support by wearing blue, a gesture to unite in mourning and remember a teammate whose life was cut tragically short. The sorrowful event brings into focus crucial safety lessons, hoping to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
