Teen fatally shot at condo complex on Christmas Eve

Deputies said the 17-year-old died at the scene as investigators searched for suspects.

ORLANDO, FL. — A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon in the parking lot of a condo complex in Orange County, authorities said, a deadly burst of gunfire on Christmas Eve that drew deputies, crime-scene tape and a helicopter search over a busy retail corridor near The Mall at Millenia.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. at The Greens Condominiums, near the intersection of Oak Ridge Road and PGA Boulevard. Deputies found the teen with gunshot wounds and pronounced him dead at the scene. By early evening, investigators had not publicly identified the victim or announced arrests, describing the case as an active homicide investigation.

The first calls came in midafternoon as families across the area were preparing for holiday gatherings. Patrol units converged on The Greens, a multi-building condo community set back from the roadway behind rows of parked cars and covered carports. Within minutes, deputies had roped off a large section of the parking lot, according to witnesses and local television coverage, and residents watched from sidewalks and balconies as investigators moved between vehicles and taped-off spaces.

A man who lives at the complex and asked not to be identified said he heard at least five gunshots and immediately called 911. He said deputies arrived quickly. The witness told investigators he saw two men run from the area after the shots were fired. “It was pretty bold,” the witness said, describing the scene as children were nearby outside before parents pulled them indoors. The sheriff’s office has not said whether it has confirmed that account or whether the gunfire was targeted or random.

By late afternoon, the scene was still locked down. A sheriff’s helicopter circled overhead as deputies searched the surrounding blocks, the witness said, and investigators continued documenting the area. Some families could not reach their homes while the parking lot remained restricted, adding a layer of disruption to a day that is typically one of the busiest of the year for travel and holiday plans. The mall and major roads nearby draw heavy traffic, and residents described a tense wait as they stood behind the perimeter watching for updates.

Authorities released few details about what led up to the shooting, who fired the gun, or what kind of weapon was used. The sheriff’s office said only that the teen had been shot and that the investigation was continuing. Officials did not say whether the victim knew the shooter, whether there had been an argument beforehand, or whether the gunfire involved one shooter or more than one. Investigators also did not say whether they believe the suspects ran toward nearby businesses, into another residential area, or toward the major intersections that connect to South John Young Parkway.

The Greens Condominiums sits a few blocks south of The Mall at Millenia, a major shopping destination for Central Florida that remains active throughout the holiday season. The location is surrounded by apartment complexes, small businesses and high-traffic roadways that can complicate searches for suspects. In similar cases, detectives often canvass for doorbell video, security-camera footage from nearby businesses, and cellphone video from bystanders, while interviewing residents and collecting shell casings and other evidence that can help reconstruct the shooting.

Orange County has grappled with a series of high-profile shootings involving teenagers and young people in recent months, putting pressure on investigators to quickly determine motives and identify suspects before retaliation or fear spreads through neighborhoods. Earlier this fall, a separate fatal shooting of a juvenile at an Orange County park prompted renewed concerns about youth violence. In Wednesday’s case, deputies did not describe any immediate threat to the broader community but also did not say whether they had located the suspects described by the witness.

In Florida, investigators typically coordinate with the medical examiner’s office to confirm the cause of death and begin the process of notifying next of kin before releasing a victim’s identity. Detectives also use early witness interviews to narrow a suspect description, determine whether a getaway vehicle was used, and establish a timeline that can be matched against surveillance footage. Authorities have not said whether the teen was transported by ambulance or declared dead on arrival, but they said he was pronounced dead at the scene, suggesting the shooting was quickly fatal.

Residents and neighbors described a sharp contrast between the holiday mood and the sudden police presence. Some stood in small groups, phones in hand, while deputies moved through the lot and spoke with people who had been outside. Others remained inside, peering through blinds, as patrol vehicles blocked access to certain lanes and the sound of a helicopter drifted overhead. The witness who called 911 said the gunfire sounded rapid and intense, and he worried about how close children were to the area where shots were fired.

As the investigation proceeds, the sheriff’s office is expected to review physical evidence and gather video that could confirm how many suspects were involved and where they went. Authorities have not announced any scheduled news conference, but in many homicide investigations detectives release suspect descriptions or request tips once initial evidence is collected and interviews are completed. If arrests are made, prosecutors will determine potential charges based on evidence, including whether the shooting was planned, occurred during a dispute, or involved circumstances that could elevate charges under Florida law.

By Wednesday night, deputies remained on scene and the area around the condo complex was still marked by police tape and flashing lights. Investigators said the case remained under active investigation, with the next major milestone likely to be the release of the victim’s name and, if identified, a description of the suspects seen running from the scene.
