Tony Camarillo’s girlfriend says her former partner shot him as the couple headed to a local film screening.
NORFOLK, VA — Police are searching for a 30-year-old Seaford man wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of Tony L. Camarillo in Norfolk’s Ghent neighborhood, while Camarillo’s girlfriend says her former partner shot him in front of her.
Norfolk police identified Skyler R. Brock as the man wanted in connection with the active homicide investigation. Police said the shooting was domestic-related but have not publicly detailed a motive or announced criminal charges against Brock. Investigators said they believe he may be in the Seaford area of York County.
Officers were sent to Colley Avenue near Spotswood Avenue at about 8:10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, after receiving a report of a gunshot victim. They found Camarillo, 31, with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Norfolk police.
Jaida Garrison, Camarillo’s girlfriend, told 13News Now that Brock was her former partner and the father of her child. She said she witnessed Camarillo being shot and described the experience as the most traumatic event she had endured. Her account of the shooting and her belief that jealousy played a role have not been independently established by police, who have described the case more broadly as domestic-related.
Camarillo was an entrepreneur, musician and filmmaker involved in the Hampton Roads arts community. Friends and colleagues told WTKR that he and Garrison had co-produced a short film called “Gallery of Nightmares” for the Hampton Roads 48 Hour Film Project. They were on their way to the film’s screening at the Naro Expanded Cinema when Camarillo was killed, project producer Jeannette Rainey said.
Rainey said Camarillo had been part of the local film community for about a year but had already made a strong impression. Another longtime friend, Zachary Hines II, remembered Camarillo as a caring person and a father who took pride in his three children. The shooting has prompted an outpouring of grief among people who knew him through Norfolk’s music and filmmaking communities.
The investigation also extended beyond Norfolk. Authorities said Brock is from Seaford, and law enforcement activity was reported in that area after police identified him as a person wanted in connection with the case. The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office described Brock as about 5 feet 6 inches tall and roughly 115 pounds. Authorities have not announced that he has been taken into custody.
Police have released few details about what investigators believe happened immediately before the shooting. They have not publicly disclosed what evidence led detectives to Brock, whether a weapon has been recovered or what charges could result from the investigation. Brock’s connection to the killing remains an allegation while detectives continue gathering evidence.
As of Saturday, Aug. 15, Norfolk police continued to list Brock as wanted in connection with the homicide and asked anyone with current information about his whereabouts to contact authorities. The investigation into Camarillo’s death remains active.
