MASSAPEQUA, NY – A police chase that began in Queens ended in tragedy on Long Island when officers shot and killed a driver who tried to evade capture. The incident, which also resulted in injuries to five Nassau County officers, two NYPD officers, and a bystander, unfolded late Friday night.
Surveillance footage captured the chaotic conclusion of the pursuit, showing the suspect’s car coming to a stop on a Massapequa sidewalk amidst gunfire. Local residents described the scene as a rapid exchange of shots, forcing them to seek cover.
The chase began in Queens when officers attempted to pull over the driver around 11 p.m. The suspect reportedly tried to ram two police officers, hitting them before fleeing the scene. Nassau County police later intercepted the vehicle on Sunrise Highway, where the driver attempted to run down more officers, who narrowly avoided being struck.
The suspect’s efforts to escape led to a series of collisions, including hitting another police car and a civilian vehicle. The pursuit ended when the driver lost control of the vehicle near the location where the gunfire was exchanged.
Authorities have not disclosed specific details about the moments leading up to the shooting. However, it has been confirmed that the driver was fatally shot by officers. The injured officers and bystanders were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
