Man Charged After Mother Found Fatally Shot

Deputies said Michael Levi Flores fled, crashed nearby and fought officers before his arrest.

CONROE, TX — A 23-year-old Montgomery County man was arrested Monday after deputies said his mother was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside a Beeson Road home near Conroe.

Michael Levi Flores is expected to face a murder charge in the death of 50-year-old Jana Flores, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said. The case began as a domestic disturbance call before dawn and quickly spread to a nearby crash scene. Deputies said the shooting appeared to be isolated to family members, and investigators reported no ongoing threat to the public.

Deputies were first called at about 5:20 a.m. Monday to a residence on Beeson Road after a 911 caller reported that a family member was threatening people inside the home with a firearm. Capt. Alms of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said the first call was followed by more information as deputies were still responding. Officials said a second 911 call reported that a person had crashed a vehicle nearby. Investigators later identified that person as Michael Levi Flores and said he had left the home before the crash. Authorities said deputies found him near the wrecked vehicle and moved to take him into custody.

Deputies said Flores resisted arrest and fought with responding officers after he was located near the crash scene. The sheriff’s office said deputies used non-lethal weapons to gain compliance. Officials did not identify the specific tools used. No deputies were injured in the struggle, according to the sheriff’s office. While officers handled the arrest scene, additional deputies went back to the Beeson Road home. There, they found Jana Flores dead with an apparent gunshot wound. Officials said she was the suspect’s mother. Two family members were inside the home at the time, according to local reporting from the scene. Authorities have not released their names or said whether either person witnessed the shooting.

The sheriff’s office said Major Crimes detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the home after the body was found. The investigation remained active Monday as detectives worked to establish what happened before the first 911 call, who was in the home and whether any prior dispute led to the gunfire. Officials had not released a possible motive as of the latest reports. They also had not said whether the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting had been recovered. The sheriff’s office described the case as an isolated family incident, a finding that can limit a wider public-safety response but does not close the criminal investigation.

Flores was taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation after the altercation with deputies, officials said. Authorities said he would be booked into the Montgomery County Jail after medical staff released him. A murder charge in Texas is a first-degree felony in most cases, though prosecutors decide the final charge after reviewing the evidence gathered by investigators. Jail and court records were expected to show the formal booking, bond status and first court setting after the hospital clearance and intake process. The sheriff’s office said detectives continued processing the Beeson Road scene and reviewing the circumstances around the shooting and crash.

The early morning response drew deputies to two scenes, one at the family home and another at the nearby crash site. The first call centered on a person with a gun inside a residence, while the second call shifted part of the response to a wreck involving a person matching the suspect’s description. Officials said the sequence helped deputies connect the crash to the reported threat at the home. “Preliminary investigations indicate this is an isolated incident involving family members,” the sheriff’s office said in its public account. Authorities said the public was not believed to be in danger after Flores was detained.

The case now moves from the emergency response stage to a homicide investigation and court process. Detectives are expected to complete reports, review evidence from the home and crash scene, and forward findings to prosecutors. As of Thursday, May 28, officials had identified the victim, named the suspect and said a murder charge would follow his release from medical care.
