NEW YORK CITY, NY – A fatal incident unfolded in Queens on Thursday where an NYPD officer fatally shot a man who was allegedly involved in stabbing an 8-year-old boy to death earlier the same day. According to NYPD, the incident appears to be stemming from a domestic dispute, and the 20-year-old suspect and the deceased minor may have been brothers or step-brothers, though no identities have been officially disclosed so far.
Reports confirmed that the violence erupted in an apartment building located on 94th Avenue in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens. In the late afternoon, a woman, having sustained a stabbing injury in her back, rushed out of the building to seek assistance from the MTA Police nearby.
Simultaneously, the building’s security forwarded a distress call to 911. Police arrived at the crime scene within minutes and proceeded to a fifth-floor apartment based on the details provided by an eyewitness. Inside, they found the suspect with his father in a headlock, threatening him with a knife.
NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell explained the volatile situation that the responding officers confronted. Despite multiple orders to drop his weapon, the suspect continued the violent standoff. Eventually, an officer opened fire, striking the suspect. Medical aid was promptly administered, and the suspect was transported to a nearby hospital. However, after being taken to the hospital, he was ultimately declared dead.
It was discovered that an 8-month-old baby was also present during the violent incident but remained unscathed. The police, after reviewing the situation, credited the quick decision-making of their officers for having averted further harm and possibly saved two lives.
The 29-year-old woman and the 43-year-old man, both injured during the encounter, were also sent to nearby hospitals, where their conditions are expected to be stabilized. Meanwhile, the NYPD’s investigation is still ongoing. All events during the incident were recorded through police body cameras, further aiding the inquiry.
