Social worker beaten to death after knocking on the wrong door

PEEKSKILL, NY – A Westchester County social worker, 56-year-old Maria Coto, tragically succumbed to injuries sustained during a brutal assault last month, officials reported. Coto had been on life support since falling victim to a severe beating by 31-year-old Haseem Jenkins. Jenkins has been in custody since the incident, held on charges of attempted murder and assault.

Coto was in Peekskill, NY, executing a home visit in line with her duty. However, a misstep led the social worker to mistakenly knock on Jenkins’ door. He allegedly responded by violently kicking and punching her. Coto fled from Jenkins and sought refuge in a neighbor’s apartment. Reports suggest that Jenkins allegedly pursued her, continually threatening to kill her.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer referred to Coto as a dedicated professional whose lifestyle was characterized by selflessness and kindness. However, her life was brutally cut short by this act of violence. He noted the anger surrounding the tragic incident and assured a commitment to ensuring justice is served.

However, Latimer expressed that the focus currently should be on remembering Coto for her courage, warmth, and unwavering devotion to helping others.

In the wake of this tragedy, Latimer has approved an emergency contract set to improve security for caseworkers.
