INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Tragedy struck Indianapolis early Sunday morning, as a shooting in a bar’s parking lot claimed one life and left five others injured, including a police officer. The incident involved two off-duty Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers who were working at the bar at the time.
The officers, donned in full uniform, were responding to a disturbance in the parking lot around 1:30 a.m. when they found themselves in a firefight with at least one suspect. One officer was shot in the upper thigh and also suffered a shoulder injury, potentially from a fall after being shot. He is currently in stable condition and is expected to be discharged from the hospital today.
Additional officers who arrived on the scene discovered four more individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. All were rushed to nearby hospitals, their injuries not considered life-threatening. The victims’ ages ranged between 33 and 45.
In a related development, a man arrived at Community East Hospital in Indianapolis with gunshot wounds and, despite the best efforts of the medical team, did not survive. Detectives believe he was involved in the earlier shooting, and his identity will be disclosed by the Marion County Coroner’s Office after his family has been notified.
A firearm was recovered from the scene of the shooting. The cause of the initial disturbance remains unclear, but investigators are in the process of interviewing witnesses and examining surveillance footage.
