Relatives among five arrested for kidnapping and robbing man who received large cash gift

DETROIT, MI – In a dramatic turn of events, a man was discovered beaten and kidnapped near his burning vehicle, while his wife was bound during a home invasion. Federal agents revealed this was all part of a scheme to steal thousands of dollars, a case now drawing attention because some of those charged are family members of the victims.

The incident, which unfolded on Labor Day, gained traction after a viral video showed one of the victims receiving a substantial amount of money from a social media influencer. The video, initially seen as an act of generosity, became a key piece of evidence in the investigation.

Five individuals have been charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping, making their first court appearance earlier this week. The accused include the victim’s nephew, Roland Terrell Chapman, Lopez Martinez, Aisha Ann Stroman, Dania Janice Stroman, and Kenneth Paul Anderson. Investigators believe that some of the suspects are related to the victims.

The ATF, which has been leading the investigation, connected the dots after the victim’s SUV was found torched. Evidence collected over a month included phone records detailing conversations between Chapman, his incarcerated brother, and their mother about the money.

Court documents describe a chilling sequence where Lopez Martinez allegedly lured the victim by claiming car trouble. Once they reached Detroit’s east side, armed suspects reportedly appeared, robbing and threatening the victim and his wife.

Later, two more armed individuals allegedly invaded the couple’s home, tying up the wife and stealing a safe. Surveillance footage placed the suspects at various locations, including a gas station where Martinez was seen withdrawing money using the victim’s cards.

The investigation uncovered more details, such as ATM footage and call logs, which were pivotal in piecing together the suspects’ movements. Search warrants were executed at the homes of all individuals involved, leading to the discovery of guns, drugs, and other stolen items.

Community members expressed shock and disbelief, especially given the victim’s reputation as a good Samaritan. The case underscores the dangers that can accompany acts of kindness, as those with ill intentions may seek to exploit generosity.
