Deputies arrested Rau Lee Davis Jr. after investigators said a late-night gambling dispute in a front yard ended in gunfire.
POMPANO BEACH, FL — One man was killed and another was injured in a late-night shooting in Pompano Beach after an argument broke out among three men who were gambling, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting was reported about 11:53 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at a home in the 1500 block of Northwest Seventh Avenue. Investigators identified the man who died as Robert Vaughn. A second adult man was wounded, but authorities had not publicly identified him or provided details about his condition as of Saturday night.
According to investigators, Vaughn and the second man were gambling in the front yard with Rau Lee Davis Jr. when an argument developed. Detectives said Davis pulled out a firearm and fired several rounds, striking both men. Authorities have not released additional information about what led to the dispute.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue responded to the scene. Vaughn was pronounced dead there, while the second man received medical treatment for his injuries. Officials have not released further information about the wounded man’s injuries or where he was treated.
Investigators said Davis left the property after the shooting but later returned. Detectives subsequently arrested him. He faces one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder, according to authorities. The charges are allegations, and the case has not been adjudicated.
The shooting occurred in a residential area of Pompano Beach, several blocks north of Blanche Ely High School. Neighbors interviewed by CBS News Miami said they did not see what led to the gunfire. One resident reported hearing shots, while neighbors interviewed by the station said they did not know the victims.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit is leading the investigation, with assistance from crime scene investigators. Detectives have not publicly disclosed whether they recovered a firearm or what evidence they collected at the property.
Authorities also have not released additional details about the relationship, if any, among Davis, Vaughn and the surviving victim beyond investigators’ account that the three men were gambling together before the argument. No additional arrests had been announced as of Saturday night.
The investigation remained active as detectives worked to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Davis remained accused of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder, while authorities had not released further information about the surviving victim’s condition.
