Police probe four deaths in home on Christmas Eve

Officers responding to a welfare call found four people dead on Rash Lane; authorities say there is no ongoing threat.

TERRELL, TX — Four people were found dead inside a home Monday evening after Terrell police conducted a welfare check in the 200 block of Rash Lane, about 30 miles east of Dallas. Officers arrived just before 5:30 p.m. Christmas Eve and pronounced all four victims dead at the scene, the department said.

Police described the case as an isolated incident and said there is no danger to the broader public. Detectives are working with county authorities to confirm the victims’ identities and notify relatives. Officials offered few details about what they encountered inside the home and did not release ages, genders or how the victims died. The scene was secured through the night as investigators processed the house for physical evidence, interviewed neighbors and checked for additional callers who might have information about the hours leading up to the discovery.

Officers were dispatched following concern for the people inside the single-family home on Rash Lane, a residential street on Terrell’s north side not far from U.S. Highway 80. The welfare call came in shortly before 5:29 p.m., according to police. When officers entered, they located four individuals who were beyond medical help. “At this time, the incident appears to be isolated and there is no ongoing threat to the public,” the department said in a brief statement. Crime scene tape remained across the driveway as patrol units blocked off parts of the street while detectives documented the interior and exterior of the property through the evening.

Authorities have not released the victims’ names pending formal identification and notification of next of kin. Investigators did not describe visible injuries or whether any weapon was recovered. The department also did not say who requested the welfare check or how long the individuals may have been inside before officers arrived. Terrell’s detectives collected forensic evidence, canvassed the block for surveillance footage, and sought to establish a precise timeline of activity at the house on Dec. 24. The county medical examiner is expected to determine the causes and manners of death after autopsies. Police said updates would be released when confirmed facts become available.

Terrell, a Kaufman County city of roughly 20,000 residents, saw increased police activity around the neighborhood Monday night as word spread of the deaths during the holiday. The discovery came as families were gathering for Christmas Eve. The block where the home sits includes modest, mostly one-story houses with driveways opening onto Rash Lane. In recent years, local authorities have expanded welfare checks during holiday periods when schools and many workplaces are closed and loved ones report not being able to reach relatives. Police did not indicate any prior calls for service at the address, and it was not immediately known whether the people inside were related or lived at the home.

Officials said detectives would continue processing evidence and reviewing digital records to narrow the timeline. The department did not announce any arrests or persons of interest. No charges had been filed as of Saturday, and the agency did not detail whether other law enforcement partners had been requested for specialized assistance beyond routine forensic support. The investigation remains active, and authorities said additional information would be released after the medical examiner’s office completes preliminary findings and after families have been notified.

Through the evening Monday and into Tuesday, officers maintained a perimeter while investigators worked inside. Neighbors described the street as typically quiet during the holidays, with many homes displaying decorations and porch lights after dark. One resident said she noticed police cars arriving around dusk and watched as the area was sealed off, but she did not hear any commotion beforehand. By late night, most cruisers had left, leaving a single unit to watch the home while detectives planned to return in daylight to finish documenting the scene and re-interview nearby residents who might have been away during the initial canvass.

As of Saturday, police had not shared a suspected cause of the deaths or confirmed whether the case involved foul play. The department emphasized that verified details would be released in stages once next-of-kin notifications are complete and laboratory results are in hand. The next expected update could come after autopsy examinations and identity confirmations, which authorities said must happen before names can be released.
