An employee was hospitalized in stable condition after gunfire erupted Monday morning inside the West Lodi Avenue restaurant.
LODI, CA — Lodi police fatally shot a 29-year-old armed man inside a McDonald’s on Monday after responding to reports of a person threatening employees and finding that a worker had been shot, authorities said.
Police identified the man as Jonhatan Anguiano. Officers were called at about 9:30 a.m. Aug. 24 to the McDonald’s on West Lodi Avenue near Church Street. Police said responding officers heard gunfire coming from inside the restaurant before entering and encountering Anguiano, who was armed. Officers then shot him, according to the department. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
An employee who had been shot inside the restaurant was taken to a hospital and was reported in stable condition later Monday, police said. Authorities did not publicly identify the employee or release additional information about the person’s injuries. Police also had not disclosed what led to the initial confrontation or whether Anguiano knew the employee.
Police said there was no continuing threat to the public after the shooting. Investigators had not announced a motive or released a detailed account of what happened before officers arrived. Authorities also had not publicly said whether Anguiano fired at officers or described the precise sequence that led police to use deadly force.
Cheryl Steneck, who was in the restaurant’s drive-through lane, told CBS Sacramento that she saw police vehicles surround the McDonald’s and an officer get out with a gun drawn. Steneck said an employee told her that someone inside had a gun. She remained trapped in the drive-through for a time because vehicles were ahead of her and police vehicles were behind her.
Steneck said she heard several gunshots while she was still in the drive-through. She told the television station that she did not know who was being shot and was especially worried about the employee she had been speaking with. Police later directed vehicles out of the drive-through one at a time, she said.
Nearby witnesses also described a large law enforcement response. Stocktonia reported that officers blocked off the McDonald’s and part of the surrounding area as investigators worked at the scene. The restaurant sits near the intersection of West Lodi Avenue and Church Street, where police had earlier asked people to stay away during the investigation.
The fatal shooting also triggered the county’s established process for reviewing officer-involved critical incidents. San Joaquin County’s protocol covers incidents in which law enforcement use of force causes a death and provides for investigators and prosecutors to respond and review the circumstances. Lodi Police Department policy likewise calls for officer-involved shootings and deaths to be handled under the county protocol.
Authorities had not released the identities of the officers involved as of Tuesday or said how many officers fired. Police also had not announced when additional evidence, such as body-camera footage or other investigative material, might be made public. The circumstances surrounding the employee’s shooting and the officers’ use of deadly force remain under investigation.
