LANCASTER, CA – A tragic mid-air collision between two small planes in Lancaster on Sunday afternoon resulted in the death of one pilot. The other pilot miraculously survived without any injuries and is currently cooperating with investigators to determine the cause of the accident.
Emergency services were alerted just before 1 p.m. to reports of two downed aircraft in the rural area of Lancaster. One plane crash-landed near Avenue G and 60th Street East, while the other came to rest about two miles southeast, near 47th Street East and Avenue F. Fortunately, no one on the ground was injured, although one of the planes crashed dangerously close to a residential home.
Authorities, including the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, quickly arrived at the scene to commence their investigation. The area remains active as multiple agencies work to piece together the events leading up to the collision. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are also involved in the investigation.
Eyewitnesses described the surviving pilot as visibly distressed, walking around the crash site in a state of shock. Residents expressed relief that the incident occurred in a sparsely populated area, preventing what could have been a much more catastrophic outcome.
The identity of the deceased pilot has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. As the investigation continues, officials are urging the public to avoid the crash sites to allow for a thorough examination of the wreckage.
The community remains on edge as they await more information on what might have caused this tragic accident. For now, Lancaster mourns the loss of a life and reflects on the narrow escape from a potentially larger disaster.
