Phoenix Homeowner Shot Inside House, Suspect Arrested

Police said the wounded homeowner knew the man accused in the shooting.

PHOENIX, AZ — A Phoenix homeowner was seriously injured late Friday after police said a man he knew shot him inside his house near 33rd Avenue and Orangewood Avenue.

The shooting drew Phoenix police to a north Phoenix neighborhood at about 11 p.m. May 15. Investigators said the homeowner had allowed the man into the residence before the gunfire. The suspect, later identified as 46-year-old Robert Parker, was arrested nearby after police said he ran from the home and hid in a backyard with a pistol.

Police said the victim was taken to a hospital with a serious injury and was expected to survive. His name had not been released as of Sunday. Authorities also had not announced a motive, and the relationship between the homeowner and Parker was described only as a prior connection. The shooting remained under investigation after Parker was booked into jail.

The case began inside a home in the area of 33rd Avenue and Orangewood Avenue, a residential part of north Phoenix. Police said the homeowner let Parker into the house before Parker shot him around 11 p.m. Friday. After the shooting, Parker ran to another house nearby, according to police. Officers later found him in the backyard, where they said he was hiding with a handgun.

A neighbor said the police response quickly filled the area. The neighbor said he came outside around 11 or 11:20 p.m. and saw officers around the home and helicopters overhead. “I didn’t hear any yelling or any screaming, and then I thought I heard a gunshot,” the neighbor said. The neighbor said gunfire is not unusual enough in the area to immediately make clear what had happened.

Police said Parker also had outstanding warrants for violating parole when he was taken into custody. Officials did not immediately release the exact charges tied to the shooting. Investigators also had not said whether the pistol recovered near Parker was believed to be the weapon used in the attack. The homeowner’s condition was described as serious, but police said he was expected to live.

The shooting adds to a continuing Phoenix police investigation focused on what happened before the gunfire, why Parker was at the home and what led to the attack. Police have not said whether anyone else was inside the residence at the time. They also have not released any 911 call details, body camera information or court records describing Parker’s first appearance after the arrest.

As of Sunday, the victim remained unidentified and the motive remained unknown. Parker had been booked into jail, and Phoenix police said the investigation was continuing after the late Friday shooting.
