Parents charged after teen’s crime spree

GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ – A rash of car break-ins over the weekend has led to charges against three individuals and their parents. Police in Gloucester City arrested two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, along with 19-year-old Wesley Hunter, in connection with a series of vehicle burglaries early Sunday morning. The authorities have also charged the parents of the juveniles for failing to supervise their children.

The arrests followed incidents captured on surveillance footage around 1:30 a.m. in the Highland Park area. The video shows three individuals attempting to access cars parked in driveways. Denise Glassman, a local resident, reported that her son-in-law’s unlocked vehicle was among those targeted, with credit cards and a bicycle stolen.

The police chief explained that the strategy of holding parents accountable aims to reduce juvenile crime. The juveniles from Camden were released to their parents, who now face charges that typically result in a municipal court appearance and a fine.

Hunter, who had outstanding warrants, was handed over to Camden County Police. The community has expressed relief at the arrests but remains cautious, taking measures like using security cameras and staying vigilant.

Residents like Glassman emphasize the importance of parental responsibility in preventing such crimes. “If someone came to my house and said my kids did something wrong, I would take responsibility,” she said.

Police urge the public to check their vehicles for signs of burglary and have recovered several stolen items. They continue to encourage neighborhood vigilance.
