Police identified the person killed as 18-year-old Tristan Barker of Blue Springs.
BLUE SPRINGS, MO — A Blue Springs homeowner shot and killed an 18-year-old intruder early Friday after calling 911 to report a burglary in progress at a home near Little Garden Lane, police said.
The shooting drew police and paramedics to a residential area near Lake Lotawana and left detectives sorting through what happened before officers arrived. Police said the homeowner reported that someone had unlawfully entered the residence. The person shot was later identified as Tristan Barker, 18, of Blue Springs.
Officers were called Friday morning to the area of Southwest Little Garden Lane and Southeast Third Street after the homeowner contacted dispatchers. Police said the homeowner told 911 that a person had illegally entered the home. Before officers reached the address, the homeowner fired at the intruder. When police and emergency medical crews arrived, Barker was pronounced dead at the scene. Blue Springs police said Saturday that Barker was not known to the homeowner. Authorities have not released the homeowner’s name.
Detectives continued an active shooting investigation through the weekend. Police have not said whether Barker was armed, how he entered the home or what happened in the moments before the shot was fired. Officials also have not said whether any other people were inside the home at the time. The case remains under review, and police said more information would be released as it becomes available. No charges had been announced in the shooting based on the latest public information.
The shooting happened in a neighborhood that residents described as quiet. Ring camera video shared by neighbors showed police activity near a nearby home after the shooting. James Ononye, who lives in the area, said the incident surprised him. “I’m just more in shock than anything,” Ononye said. Another neighbor, Oscar Kibkoros, said the shooting made him think about his family’s safety. Zion Torres, who said he used to live next door, said he was appalled because the area usually had few problems.
Police are treating the death as part of a shooting investigation tied to the reported break-in. The inquiry is expected to include the 911 call, statements from the homeowner and any available video or physical evidence from the home and surrounding area. Investigators also are expected to determine Barker’s movements before he entered the residence and whether anyone else was involved. The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office could review the case after police complete their investigation, though no referral or charging decision has been announced.
The case follows other recent police responses in Blue Springs, including shootings and burglary-related investigations, but officials have not linked Friday’s incident to any earlier case. The home is in eastern Jackson County, near the Lake Lotawana area. Police did not report an ongoing danger to the public after the shooting. The homeowner’s condition was not released, and authorities did not say whether anyone else was hurt.
The investigation remained open Sunday. Police had identified Barker and said he was not known to the homeowner, but key details about the break-in, the shooting and any possible legal review had not been released.
