Police identified the man killed and said two suspects in dark clothing ran from the scene.
CLEARWATER, FL — One man was killed and four others were hurt in a shooting just before 8 p.m. Sunday outside Fuzzy’s Sports Bar & Grill on South Highland Avenue, police said. Officers found the man dead in the parking lot as other victims arrived at a nearby hospital.
Detectives spent Monday piecing together what happened and who pulled the trigger. The case is in its early stages, with investigators reviewing surveillance video from businesses near the bar and interviewing witnesses. Police identified the man who died as 24-year-old Jordan Javontay Walls. Four men — ages 22 to 27 — were treated for gunshot wounds after a private car dropped them at Morton Plant Hospital and drove away, police said. No arrests have been announced, and officials say the shooting does not appear to be random. The department has urged anyone with information to contact detectives as they track the suspects’ path and determine a motive.
Calls about shots fired began coming in shortly before 8 p.m. on Sunday. Responding officers found Walls in the parking lot outside the sports bar and attempted to secure the scene while medics moved in. Within minutes, hospital staff notified police that four additional gunshot victims had been brought by private vehicle and that the driver left without speaking to officers. Clearwater Police spokesman Rob Shaw said homicide detectives are working to establish what led to the gunfire and how many shooters were involved. “Detectives are working to determine what led to the shooting,” Shaw said, adding that the sequence of events remains under active review. One of the wounded men was later transferred to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with serious injuries, police said.
By Monday morning, officials publicly named the five people struck by gunfire: Walls, 24, who died at the scene; and Teron Albert Dudley, 27; Jaheim Jabez Maxie, 23; Lamar Johnson, 23; and Antwone Jackquezz Holmes, 22, who were hospitalized. Police said detectives believe two men wearing dark clothing fled after the shooting. Investigators are analyzing security footage from the corridor around the bar and nearby storefronts to track movements before and after the shots. Detectives also are working to locate the vehicle that delivered the four wounded men to Morton Plant Hospital and then left, a detail police described as an important lead in reconstructing the timeline. Officials reiterated that early evidence suggests the attack was not random, but they have not released a suspected motive. The names of the suspected assailants were not available.
Fuzzy’s Sports Bar & Grill sits along South Highland Avenue, a commercial stretch south of downtown Clearwater that mixes small shops, restaurants and service businesses with residential streets a few blocks away. On Sunday evenings, the area draws football crowds and neighborhood traffic. Police did not specify whether an argument started inside the bar or in the parking lot, and they did not say how many rounds were fired. In recent years, businesses along South Highland have added cameras that point toward lots and entrances, and detectives said they expect those recordings to help clarify the sequence of events. The department said additional officers canvassed the neighborhood Sunday night to gather statements and check for shell casings or other physical evidence in and around the lot.
Investigators outlined several immediate steps: canvassing the bar and adjacent storefronts for video; tracing any shell casings or recovered bullets to potential firearms; reviewing hospital intake notes; and following up with the four wounded men once their conditions allow longer interviews. Police said the case will be referred to the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney’s Office for charging decisions once detectives identify suspects. No court filings were listed Monday afternoon. Clearwater Police said they plan to release further updates as detectives verify details, including the number of shooters, the type of weapon used and the motive. The agency said it would share new information on Monday evening if lab and video reviews produce actionable leads.
Outside the bar Monday, police tape still ringed a section of the lot while vehicles came and went from nearby businesses. A small cluster of flowers appeared near where Walls was found. Neighbors described hearing rapid bangs and then people shouting for help. “It was quick — a burst, and then cars peeling out,” said a man who works at a nearby shop and asked not to be named because he is not authorized to speak for his employer. Later in the morning, a tow truck removed a sedan with visible damage from the lot as detectives measured distances between markers and photographed the pavement. Officers thanked store owners who turned over video, and a city crew collected debris from the scene after technicians finished documenting it.
As of Monday evening, no arrests had been announced. Police said the next major update is expected after detectives finish reviewing surveillance video and interviewing the hospitalized witnesses. Officials said they will provide another briefing if a suspect description is refined or if an arrest warrant is obtained.
