Norovirus outbreak hits cruise ship

MIAMI, FL – A Royal Caribbean cruise ship, Serenade of the Seas, docked at Port Miami with nearly 100 passengers reportedly ill due to a norovirus outbreak. The ship’s arrival has prompted heightened health precautions among port workers.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 94 out of 1,874 passengers fell ill, representing about 5% of those on board. Additionally, four crew members were affected, making up less than 1% of the crew.

Joshua Pettit, a passenger, observed increased safety measures during the voyage. “Staff served food at the buffet, and crew members were constantly sanitizing surfaces,” he noted.

The 13-day cruise began in San Diego, traversing the Panama Canal before reaching the Caribbean. It was after a stop in Mexico that passenger Bob experienced severe symptoms. “It hit suddenly and violently,” he recalled, describing an episode that occurred in a lounge.

The outbreak has raised concerns about the contagious nature of norovirus, a virus known for causing gastroenteritis. Port workers are taking extra precautions, donning gloves and masks as they handle the situation.

An infectious disease specialist is expected to provide insights into how such outbreaks occur and the virus’s contagiousness. Meanwhile, authorities are preparing for the disembarkation of passengers, which is anticipated shortly.

The CDC continues to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that protocols are followed to prevent further spread.
