Three Women Charged After Stabbing of Mother

Police said the 32-year-old victim was attacked on East 10th Street and later died at a San Antonio hospital.

DEL RIO, TX — Three women were charged with murder after a 32-year-old woman was stabbed Thursday afternoon in Del Rio and later died at a San Antonio hospital, police said.

Del Rio police identified the suspects as Kitty Mia Diaz, 21; Amaya Cookie Diaz, 19; and Kyandra Renee Faz, 21. The case moved from an assault investigation to a homicide investigation within hours, after the victim was first taken to Val Verde Regional Medical Center and then transferred for emergency care. Police said all three women remained in custody pending magistration.

Officers were called to Val Verde Regional Medical Center at about 2:10 p.m. Thursday after hospital staff reported that a woman had arrived with multiple stab wounds. Police said officers soon learned the assault happened in the 800 block of East 10th Street, a residential area in Del Rio. Because of the severity of the wounds, the victim was taken to a medical facility in San Antonio. Del Rio police said investigators were notified at about 9 p.m. that the woman had died from her injuries.

Detectives identified three suspects during the early stage of the investigation. Police said investigators reviewed surveillance video, processed evidence and interviewed witnesses before making arrests later Thursday. Officers found and arrested Kitty Mia Diaz and Amaya Cookie Diaz at about 4 p.m. without incident. Faz was arrested a short time later, police said. All three suspects were taken to the Del Rio Police Department for booking and processing before being transported to the GEO Correctional Facility.

The victim’s name had not been released in the first police updates reviewed Friday. Local reporting identified her as a mother of five, and relatives and people close to her described a family left in shock by the daytime attack. Police have not said what led to the stabbing, whether the victim and suspects knew each other, or whether investigators recovered the weapon used in the assault. Officials also have not released a detailed account of how many people were present when the attack happened.

The homicide investigation is centered on East 10th Street, a city block east of downtown Del Rio and a short drive from the Val Verde County Courthouse area. Del Rio sits on the Texas-Mexico border, across from Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, and major criminal cases there are handled through local police, the Val Verde County court system and the district attorney’s office. In this case, police said the first emergency contact happened at the hospital, not at the scene of the reported assault.

After the victim died, each suspect was charged with murder. Police said the case remains open as detectives continue to gather evidence and determine the full circumstances of the stabbing. The next procedural step is magistration, when each defendant is advised of the charge and bond may be addressed. Court records and jail information were expected to provide further details on bond amounts, appointed attorneys and future hearing dates once the booking process moved forward.

Police described the arrests as part of a fast-moving investigation that unfolded over roughly seven hours, from the first hospital report in Del Rio to the victim’s death notice from San Antonio. The department said the investigation remains “active and ongoing,” and additional charges may be filed. Family members and friends, meanwhile, began publicly remembering the victim as a mother whose death left children and loved ones grieving while the criminal case begins.

The three suspects remained jailed Friday as detectives continued reviewing evidence from the East 10th Street assault. Police had not announced a motive or a final charging decision beyond the murder counts.
