Missing Teacher And Mother Of Three Found Murdered

A New Jersey teacher’s tragic death has shocked the community as the Hudson County District Attorney has ruled it a homicide. Luz Hernandez, a 33-year-old mother of three and teacher at BelovED Charter School, was found dead on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 from “blunt force trauma to the head and compressions to the neck.”

The search for her killer is underway as police continue to investigate the case with assistance from the Jersey City Police Department and the Kearny Police Department.

Luz Hernandez was reported missing over the weekend and was officially reported on Monday, leading police to conduct a welfare check at her Jersey City home. When they arrived, they found blood splatters on the door of her apartment, which later led to the discovery of her body in a shallow grave.

The news of her passing has left the BelovED community devastated as Hernandez was well-loved and respected by her colleagues and students. BelovED founder Bret Schunder said of Hernandez, “She was a wonderful co-worker. She was a beloved member of the BelovED family. People are feeling devastated by this.” In honor of her loss, BelovED Charter School was closed on Wednesday.

Hernandez was a dedicated teacher, starting at the school after graduating from Saint Peter’s University in 2017. She began her career at BelovED as a teacher’s assistant and quickly became a beloved member of the community. Her passing is a loss for the entire community, and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case to bring her killer to justice.

As the community mourns the loss of a dedicated and loving teacher, they hold onto the hope that justice will be served for Luz Hernandez. The investigation continues, but no arrests have been made at this time.
