FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Authorities have detained a 38-year-old man in connection with the disappearance of a 13-year-old girl from the Tampa area. The girl was found in the suspect’s apartment four days after being reported missing.
The suspect, Edward Rodriguez, appeared in Broward County bond court on Wednesday, where a judge imposed strict conditions, including a prohibition on any contact with minors or the alleged victim. Rodriguez faces multiple charges, including molestation of a minor.
The investigation revealed that the girl, who lives in the Tampa area, left her home without permission early Saturday morning. Rodriguez allegedly drove four hours to pick her up and brought her to his apartment in Cooper City. According to the arrest report, the two met through a gaming app in April and had been communicating for several months.
The teen told police that she and Rodriguez had planned to run away together and live in his apartment indefinitely. She also disclosed that Rodriguez had kissed her and expressed his love for her. Investigators found a message from Rodriguez stating that he intended to lock her in his basement to prevent anyone from taking her away.
Amanda Altman, CEO of Christie House, an organization that assists children who have been sexually abused, emphasized the importance of parental vigilance regarding their children’s online activities. She noted that many children are sexually solicited online and groomed over time by perpetrators who often pose as boyfriends.
Altman advised parents to ensure their children use computers in public spaces within the home, such as the family room, where their activities can be monitored. She also recommended that parents be alert to any sudden changes in their children’s behavior, such as increased isolation or changes in their friend groups.
Rodriguez faces additional charges of interference with child custody, further complicating his legal situation.
