CHIPPEWA FALLS, WI – A distressing incident emerged from Wisconsin where a wagon accident at an apple orchard left over 25 individuals, including children, injured. Three of these individuals are said to be in critical condition, as stated by authorities.
The accident occurred at the “Bushel and a Peck Apple Orchard” in Chippewa Falls on Wednesday morning. At the time, a group of elementary school children were partaking in a field trip accompanied by parents and chaperones. They were enjoying a wagon ride when disaster struck, according to Chippewa County Sheriff Travis Hakes.
A tractor was seen hauling two wagons at a moderate speed within the bounds of the orchard. While descending a hill, one of the wagons found itself losing control, eventually tipping sideways and turning over. This sudden instability resulted in numerous injuries to both children and adults present in the wagon.
Sheriff Hakes described the unfortunate day as a traumatic experience for all those involved. Upon arrival, the fire department of Chippewa formed a plan to implement its mass casualty protocol. This decision was made to facilitate swift response and aid from various external agencies.
Of the 25 individuals who were transported from the accident scene for medical attention, one was airlifted by Mayo Clinic’s helicopter, and 22 were transported by ambulance. A few others reached medical facilities in their own vehicles. Among the injured, five were seriously affected, while three reported life-threatening conditions.
Children who were a part of this incident attended St. Mark Lutheran School in Eau Claire, confirmed Principal Peter Micheel. The school’s immediate focus has been ensuring the safe reunion of children with their caregivers.
