Masked Gunmen Sought in Eight Armed Robberies Across Philadelphia

Police say suspects used handguns with laser attachments during a series of early morning robberies across several city neighborhoods.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Philadelphia police are searching for a group of masked suspects believed to be responsible for eight robberies across the city since Oct. 2, including incidents near Temple University and outside a luxury Center City hotel. Investigators say the suspects used handguns, some equipped with lasers and flashlights, to threaten victims and steal personal belongings.

The robberies occurred over three mornings in North Philadelphia, Northern Liberties, Spring Garden, Center City and Fairmount. Police believe two young men were involved in most of the incidents, while additional suspects joined them during later robberies. At least one incident involved five armed individuals. No injuries have been reported, but authorities say the suspects’ increasingly aggressive behavior has raised concerns about the risk of serious violence.

Philadelphia Police Capt. Jason Smith of the Central Detective Division described the investigation during a news conference Wednesday, Oct. 7. Detectives are examining surveillance recordings, recovered property and a stolen vehicle as they work to identify the suspects. Police released video showing some of the encounters and asked the public for help locating those responsible.

The first reported robbery occurred early Friday, Oct. 2, near the 1800 block of West Norris Street in North Philadelphia. According to Smith, two armed suspects approached a 36-year-old man who was sleeping inside his vehicle. The suspects allegedly stole his watch, two silver chains and a medallion. Police said the handguns used during the encounter had flashlight and laser attachments.

Five more robberies followed Sunday, Oct. 4, between approximately 4:40 a.m. and 6:05 a.m. Investigators say two masked suspects traveled between neighborhoods in a stolen black Honda Accord. The first incident occurred near 400 Spring Garden Street, where a man and woman were confronted at gunpoint. Their cellphones, house keys and credit cards were taken, according to police.

The suspects then allegedly targeted a 26-year-old man waiting for transportation outside the Four Seasons Hotel at 1900 Arch Street in Center City. Police said the robbers took his cellphone, wallet, bag and clothing. Surveillance cameras recorded the encounter, providing investigators with footage of the suspects and their actions.

The robberies continued in Spring Garden, where a 28-year-old man near 2222 Green Street was robbed of his headphones and cellphone. Another victim was confronted near Broad and Master streets shortly before 6 a.m. and lost his backpack. Minutes later, three women near the 1900 block of North 16th Street, close to Temple University’s campus, were robbed of bags.

Police said the suspects displayed firearms equipped with laser attachments during the Sunday incidents. Surveillance footage showed a visible blue laser during one of the encounters. Investigators believe the robbers frequently targeted pedestrians carrying bags, although the first victim was inside a parked vehicle.

Detectives recovered the stolen black Honda Accord on Monday, Oct. 5, along the 2200 block of West Sergeant Street in North Philadelphia. Authorities said the vehicle had been reported stolen in New Jersey. Investigators are examining it for fingerprints and other evidence that could help identify the suspects. Police also recovered some stolen cellphones at separate locations.

Two additional robberies were reported Tuesday, Oct. 6. In the first, a 61-year-old woman was approached near the 2600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in the Fairmount area. Police said three masked suspects stole her bag, cellphone, laptop, wallet and other belongings. Smith said firearms were not displayed during that particular encounter, although weapons were involved in the broader robbery pattern.

Later Tuesday morning, a 22-year-old man was confronted near the 1900 block of West Norris Street. According to police, two masked suspects emerged from a red Honda Accord and approached him with handguns. Three additional suspects remained inside the vehicle and also pointed firearms toward the victim. Investigators described the incident as a troubling escalation because of the number of armed people involved.

“The way that these suspects are acting, it’s only a matter of time before something really bad happens,” Smith said during Wednesday’s news conference.

Investigators described the suspects as young Black males, approximately 16 to 20 years old, with thin to medium builds. They reportedly wore black clothing, ski masks and distinctive red gloves with black palms. Police have not publicly identified the suspects, and the descriptions remain part of an active investigation.

The red vehicle used during Tuesday’s robberies was described as a Honda Accord from approximately the 2018 through 2021 model years. Police said it had heavily tinted windows, a sunroof and chrome door handles. Unlike the black Accord recovered earlier in the investigation, the red vehicle had not been located as of Wednesday’s police briefing.

Smith said investigators had not determined whether the eight robberies were connected to other recent armed robberies in Philadelphia involving rifles resembling AR-15s. Those incidents are being investigated separately, and police have not established a connection between the cases.

As of the latest available reports, no arrests had been announced in connection with the eight robberies. The Philadelphia Police Department’s Central Detective Division is continuing to review surveillance footage and other evidence. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the suspects or the red Honda Accord to contact investigators at 215-686-3093 or submit a confidential tip through 215-686-TIPS (8477).
