Man Dies After Scooter Crash While Fleeing San Francisco Police

Police said the man was wanted on an outstanding warrant, while witnesses gave a different account of how the fatal collision occurred.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A man fleeing San Francisco police on a scooter died Monday after a collision near Mission and Eighth streets, authorities said, an incident that remains under investigation as witness accounts raise questions about the moments before the crash.

San Francisco police said officers encountered the man while attempting to apprehend him on an outstanding warrant. Police said he fled on a scooter and collided with what the department described as a “street fixture.” Officers provided first aid before paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man’s name had not been released Monday, and police had not disclosed details about the warrant. Several news organizations citing police placed the encounter at about 11:24 a.m., while other reports citing police information described it as occurring around 12:30 p.m. The reason for that difference was not immediately clear.

Police did not initially identify the object struck by the scooter. CBS San Francisco reported that images from the Citizen app appeared to show that the collision involved a bus stop at the corner of Eighth and Mission streets. Police described the object only as a street fixture in their account.

Mission Local reported that several witnesses gave a different description of the encounter. Three witnesses told the news outlet that a gray sedan moved ahead of the scooter and blocked its path before a man got out and tackled the rider, whose head then struck a metal pole at a Muni bus shelter.

The witnesses said the person who emerged from the sedan may have been an undercover officer, but that detail had not been confirmed by police. Mission Local reported that a San Francisco Police Department spokesperson did not say whether the gray vehicle was an unmarked police car and did not comment on the witnesses’ accounts, citing the ongoing investigation.

The differing descriptions leave unresolved exactly how the fatal collision occurred. Police have said the man fled officers and collided with a fixture, while the witness accounts reported by Mission Local describe an intervention by a person who emerged from a vehicle immediately before the impact. No official finding establishing the sequence had been released Monday.

Authorities had also not released further information about the man, the warrant or whether any officers or vehicles physically made contact with him before the collision. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that police were continuing to investigate the death.

Police asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the San Francisco Police Department. The man’s identity and additional findings about the circumstances of his death remained pending as of Monday.
