Man Riding Scooter Killed in Miami Hit-and-Run Crash

Police said the driver fled after striking the man near Northwest Seventh Avenue and Northwest Seventh Street early Tuesday.

MIAMI, FL— A man in his 30s died after a vehicle struck him while he was riding a scooter early Tuesday in Miami, and the driver left the scene, according to the Miami Police Department.

Officers responded at about 4 a.m. to the area of Northwest Seventh Avenue and Northwest Seventh Street after receiving reports of a man lying in the roadway. Miami Fire Rescue was already transporting the critically injured man to a hospital when officers arrived, police said. He later died from his injuries.

A preliminary police investigation found that the man had been riding a scooter when a vehicle struck him and continued away from the scene. Authorities had not released a description of the vehicle or its driver as of Tuesday morning.

The crash occurred near the western edge of downtown Miami. Initial news reports differed in describing the surrounding neighborhood, with some identifying the area as Overtown. Police identified the crash location as the intersection of Northwest Seventh Avenue and Northwest Seventh Street.

The victim’s name had not been released in the initial reports. Authorities identified him only as a man in his 30s. Police also had not disclosed additional details about the circumstances leading to the collision or the direction the vehicle traveled after leaving the scene.

Investigators were working Tuesday to determine what happened before the man was struck and to identify the driver and vehicle involved. No information had been released about whether investigators had obtained surveillance video, witness accounts or other evidence that could help identify the vehicle.

The investigation remained ongoing Tuesday. Miami police had not announced an arrest or released a description of a suspect or vehicle in connection with the fatal collision.
