Police recovered a handgun and three knives after finding both men outside a home on Harbison Avenue.
PHILADELPHIA, PA — A 62-year-old man was fatally shot and another man was critically wounded in a stabbing during an apparent altercation at a Northeast Philadelphia home Wednesday evening, police said.
Officers responding to the 5400 block of Harbison Avenue found both men on the porch of a residence. The 62-year-old had been shot in the chest, while the second man, believed to be in his 30s, had suffered stab wounds to his arms and legs. Both were taken for medical treatment, according to published reports citing Philadelphia police.
The shooting victim was pronounced dead at a hospital. Police said the younger man remained hospitalized in critical condition but was expected to survive. Authorities had not publicly released either man’s name as of Wednesday night.
Investigators were working to determine what happened before the violence began. Witnesses reported hearing an altercation inside the house followed by a gunshot, according to police. Chief Inspector Scott Small said the 62-year-old man lived at the residence.
Police recovered several weapons while processing the property. A handgun and a knife were found outside the home, and two additional knives were recovered inside, according to police accounts. Investigators were examining the weapons as they worked to establish the sequence of events.
Police believe the two men knew each other, but authorities had not disclosed the nature of their relationship. Officials also had not announced a suspected motive or said what may have started the dispute.
Investigators were not searching for an additional suspect Wednesday night, Small said. That assessment indicated police were focusing on the confrontation between the two injured men, though authorities had not publicly assigned responsibility for either the shooting or the stabbing.
No criminal charges had been announced, and police had not said whether the hospitalized man would face charges. Detectives continued gathering evidence and witness information as they investigated the deadly encounter.
The case remained under investigation Wednesday night. Authorities had not released additional details about the events leading to the altercation or identified the man who died.
