Police said a second woman opened fire after witnessing the 38-year-old man attack a 22-year-old woman.
CHICAGO, IL — A man was fatally shot after he stabbed a woman during an argument inside an Englewood home late Friday, Chicago police said.
Officers responded shortly before 11 p.m. to the 400 block of West Marquette Road on the city’s South Side. Police said a 38-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman had been arguing inside the residence before the confrontation became violent.
Investigators said the man used a sharp object to stab the 22-year-old woman several times in the stomach. Police said he then pulled her outside the home.
Another woman who was inside the residence witnessed the attack, retrieved a gun and shot the man in the chest, according to the preliminary police account.
Emergency crews took the man to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition. He later died from his injuries, police said. Authorities had not publicly identified him as of Saturday morning.
The woman who suffered the stab wounds was taken to the same hospital. Police listed her in good condition. Her name was not released.
Officers took the woman accused of firing the fatal shot into custody. Police said charges were pending, but officials had not announced what charges, if any, she could face.
Authorities did not release the relationships among the three people or explain what led to the initial argument. Police also had not said whether the gun was legally owned or whether investigators recovered the sharp object reportedly used in the stabbing.
The investigation remained active Saturday. Police had not released additional details about the evidence collected at the home or any expected court proceedings.
