One driver was wounded before another motorist helped authorities locate the suspect following a second shooting report.
HOGANSVILLE, GA — A Louisiana man faces multiple felony charges after authorities accused him of shooting at motorists during two road rage incidents on Interstate 85 in Troup County less than 24 hours apart.
Kyle Sylvester Jr. was arrested Tuesday after officers pursued and stopped his vehicle near Hogansville, according to law enforcement accounts. Investigators said they linked him to a shooting Monday evening that wounded one driver and another shooting reported shortly before noon Tuesday. No injuries were reported in the second incident.
The first shooting occurred at about 6:30 p.m. Monday near Exit 28 in Hogansville, police said. Authorities said two vehicles had been involved in an apparent road rage encounter before someone opened fire. The wounded driver left the interstate near the exit and was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The second incident was reported at about 11:36 a.m. Tuesday after Troup County emergency dispatchers received a transferred call from neighboring Coweta County. A northbound driver told dispatchers that someone in another vehicle had fired several shots at his car, authorities said.
The driver was not struck and continued following the other vehicle while giving dispatchers information about its appearance and location. Police said the suspected shooter left the interstate and later turned south on U.S. Highway 29 near Grantville. The information allowed officers in several jurisdictions to begin searching for the vehicle.
Officers from the Grantville and Hogansville police departments joined Troup County sheriff’s deputies in the response. Authorities located the vehicle and began a brief pursuit before taking Sylvester into custody in Hogansville. Officials said the arrest ended without further gunfire or reported injuries.
Investigators later determined that Sylvester was also a suspect in the shooting from the previous evening, according to police. Authorities have not released evidence explaining how they connected the two cases, and they have not announced a suspected motive. Officials also said it remained unclear why Sylvester, who is from Louisiana, was traveling in Georgia.
Authorities said Sylvester faces charges that include aggravated assault, aggravated battery and criminal damage to property. He also faces two counts of possessing a firearm or knife during the commission or attempted commission of certain felonies, along with a misdemeanor charge of discharging a firearm within 50 yards of a public highway.
The charges are accusations, and the case has not been resolved in court. Sylvester remained in the Troup County Jail as investigators continued reviewing the shootings and compiling the case. Authorities had not publicly released information about an attorney representing him or announced his next court appearance.
