Police said the wounded driver fled the shooting scene before his truck entered Fishtrap Lake in West Dallas.
DALLAS, TX — A man died after he was shot by an unknown attacker and crashed his truck into a West Dallas lake late Tuesday, according to the Dallas Police Department.
Officers responded at about 11:29 p.m. Aug. 4 to a reported shooting in the 2200 block of Singleton Boulevard. Police said their preliminary investigation found that the victim was shot before the attacker fled the area.
The wounded man drove away but later crashed into Fishtrap Lake near Singleton Boulevard and Fish Trap Road, police said. Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel responded to the lake, where the man died.
The victim’s name had not been released as of Thursday. Police said the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office would assist in confirming his identity.
Investigators have not announced a possible motive or released a description of the person suspected in the shooting. Police also have not said whether the victim and the attacker knew each other.
FOX 4 reported that witnesses saw two drivers enter a shopping center parking lot near Singleton Boulevard and North Hampton Road before a confrontation began. Gunfire followed, and both vehicles left the area, according to the station’s account of information provided by investigators at the scene.
The victim’s truck traveled about a mile before entering the lake, FOX 4 reported. Several people called 911 after seeing the submerged vehicle, and responding officers entered the water in an effort to reach the unconscious driver.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the gunshot wound, the crash or a combination of injuries caused the man’s death. That determination will be made through the medical examiner’s investigation.
The Dallas Police Department is investigating the death as a homicide under case number 114013-2026. No arrest had been announced, and police said the suspected shooter remained unidentified.
Detectives continue to seek information about the shooting and the events leading to the truck entering the lake. Police had not released additional details about possible witnesses, surveillance video or evidence recovered from either location.
