HAMMOND, LA – In a disturbing incident that has raised alarms across state lines, a Louisiana man is in custody, accused of abducting a teenager and holding her captive in the woods of Tangipahoa Parish. Authorities report that Alexander Materne, 28, allegedly lured the 14-year-old girl from her Tennessee home after meeting her through online gaming.
The teenager was discovered in a tent situated in a remote forest area between Hammond and Ponchatoula. Although she was found to be physically unharmed, officials say she was visibly distressed by the experience. Materne, who hails from St. Rose, a suburb near New Orleans, was apprehended at his parents’ home in Jennings, which is more than two hours from where the girl was found.
Police Chief Danny Semmes of Jennings explained that the investigation began when Materne was identified as a suspect. After initial denials, Materne eventually led officers to the location where the girl was held. He confessed to crossing state lines to pick her up and admitted to having a relationship with her.
The pair had never met in person before the incident, having only interacted through an online gaming platform. Authorities are still investigating whether the girl went with Materne of her own volition, but given her age, the situation is considered criminal.
Materne faces several serious charges, including aggravated kidnapping and contributing to the delinquency of a minor in Tangipahoa Parish. In St. Charles Parish, additional charges of human trafficking and carnal knowledge have been filed.
This case highlights the growing concerns over the safety of minors engaging in online interactions. It serves as a stark reminder to parents and guardians to remain vigilant about their children’s online activities.
As the investigation continues, the community is left grappling with the unsettling reality of such incidents happening close to home. Authorities urge anyone with further information about the case to come forward.
